A plant growing in nature can be seen here. This species is adapted to dry rocky locations, sometimes growing in proximity to cacti.

Strong light and warmth are beneficial for getting this species to bloom.  The flowerstalk is especially dramatic, extending a considerable distance above the foliage.

This species is relatively intolerant of cold weather, a trait that it shares with the related S. bragae.  Tubers should be sheltered from freezing temperatures.
