Streptocarpus perrieri is named after the famous French botanist known for his botanical work in Madagascar, Henry Perrier de la Bathie, after whom many plants in Madagascar are named. It is one of the unifoliate species in Section Plantaginae, others are rosulate, but all have characteristic prominent veins on the undersides of the leaves. Its flowers are distinctive in that it possesses two ridges of papillae (hairs) on the floor of the corolla, which is an unusual characteristic in genus Streptocarpus, but is found in a number of species in Section Plantaginae. Other species in the Section Plantaginae have smooth (glabrous) inner corolla surfaces such as Streptocarpus hildebrandtii and Streptocarpus variabilis. Streptocarpus perrieri is the only species in the section to occur in South-Western Madagascar, most of the others are found in the north of island.
