There are a cluster of species names, including javanicus and lobbianus, that have been synonymized under A. pulcher. A. pulcher is a variable species, but always characterized by large red flowers that emerge from a tubular calyx, reminiscent of lipstick emerging from a tube. As a result, a number of variants of this species are referred to as “Lipstick Plants”.
Another print of A. javanicus shows a plant with similar form. A print of A. lobbianus, closely related, has different-looking flowers and calyces. A photograph of a plant can be seen here.
