Gesnera douglasii var. verticillata

Exact date of this print is a bit unclear, although a reference in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine (1859, vol 85) suggests this print is from the 5th Volume of “The Botanist” by Maund, likely in the early 1840s. The image has the characteristic crisp colors and the excellent form of many by Augusta Innes Withers, a celebrated botanical illustrator who executed many of The Botanist’s pictures.

The name to use is uncertain. The text page associated with the image uses Gesnera douglasii variety verticillata, but the illustration itself has Gesneria verticillata. We’ve taken the main name from the text page.
