Gloxinia hybrids

These three hybrids were published from 1865 – 1875, and effectively represent the great strides being made in the hybridization of Sinningia speciosa. The upright peloric form of the flowers was not found in nature, but was selected for over many generations of plants. ‘Ami Thibault’, on the right, illustrates the spotted form, whose origin remains a matter of controversy. Did genes of what we now know as Sinningia guttata make their way into the speciosa line?
