These are an excellent selection of the very early hybrids of what we now know as Kohleria. In the notes to the plate, in Flor des Serres et Jardins, Louis Van Houtte notes that the hybrids are the work of one of Horto van Houtteana’s chiefs of culture. Since Horto van Houtteana was one of the largest and most acclaimed garden and plant centers in Europe, this would have been a very significant job.
The artistry is interesting. The flowers, obviously not all from the same plant, are positioned so that they cast shadows on the leaves beneath. It’s a realistic element you don’t often see in these prints.
