This is one of the Columnea species with interesting floral appendages, not to mention fimbriate calyces.

Note that there are in fact five appendages, with two partially hidden in the photo above. Another photo shows all five clearly.

The function of the appendages and the fimbriate calyces is not clearly understood, although some have speculated that they increase the visibility of the flowers to better attract pollinators. Other species with these features include the following:
