Streptocarpus brachynema occurs in forests in the cooler high altitude areas of the isolated Gorongosa Mountain, which lies on the warm subtropical coastal plane in central Mozambique. It is a unifoliate species (leaf length up to 20 cm) with a very elegant open tube shaped mauve corolla (c. 17 mm long, 5 mm wide tube) wider lobes and with yellow and deep violet throat markings.
