Streptocarpus molweniensis ssp. molweniensis is a monocarpic, unifoliate species with a huge leaf (up to 640 x 400 mm) with a long inflorescence stalk on which many tube-shaped mauve flowers (30-55 mm long) develop. The species occurs in the middle of the Durban suburbia which spread from the low level coastal plain to a plateau some 600 m above sea level. It is conserved in the Molweni and Umhlatatuzana river valleys in the Kloof Nature Reserve in Durban, South Africa, where suburban development is not allowed.
