Streptocarpus wilmsii, is named after a German pharmacist and botanist, Friederich Wilms (1848-1919), who for 13 years (from 1893) botanized in a wide area around Lydenburg in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Streptocarpus wilmsii occurs from the higher altitude Mpumalanga Drakensberg from Mariepskop to Mbabane in Eswatini (former Swaziland). It is monocarpic although sometimes plurifoliate and perennial. It grows on moss covered rocks or dead tree trunks and has tender, light/medium green leaves (250 x 180 mm). It is floriferous with up to 25 honey scented, white flowers (25 mm long) sometimes pale violet, with violet blue spots and yellow markings in the throat.
It is a charming species and its suite of characters hold significant horticultural potential which has recently been exploited by making a number of crosses with it. It also forms hybrids with a number of species in nature which are also very attractive.
