A botanical expedition to Haiti was launched in 2015 as part of an ongoing research project to study the taxonomy and diversification of the Caribbean members of the Gesneriaceae. Part of the expedition involved revisiting the 1920s collecting localities visited by Swedish botanist Erik Ekman.
The principle focus of the 2015 expedition was to support the taxonomic treatment of the near-endemic Caribbean tribe Gesnerieae (Gesneria, Pheidonocarpa and Rhytidophyllum). A number of other members of Gesneriaceae were observed and documented as well.
