S. ionanthus ssp.occidentalis is rarely grown and seldom flowered. It is worth trying for its neat and attractive leaves, multiple-crowned habit and tidy medium to dark blue flowers. The leaves are glossy and red-backed.
The sub-species is a seasonal bloomer, and prefers cooler temperatures.
