A few Columnea species and hybrids produce very long trailing stems, and are well suited to the development of spectacular hanging baskets, sometimes over six feet long. ‘Stavanger’, it is reputed, requires relatively cool growing conditions for some period of the year in order to bloom well.

A variegated sport of ‘Stavanger’, C. ‘Maarsen’s Flame’, shows the flowers off very well against the light-colored leaves.
