This species has bright red bracts that cover almost half of the flowers’ length, which are bright yellow. The color of both bracts and flowers attract hummingbirds, which are the pollinators of this and other species of Drymonia with similar characteristics, such as D. affinis or D. coccinea.

This species grown only in Ecuador and is considered vulnerable to extinction.
