This beautiful species is atypical for the genus and it has at times been classified as a Gesneria, which is closely related to Rhytidophyllum and the most frequently seen species have red tubular flowers similar to these. Most Rhytidophyllum species have open campanulate flowers in shades of yellow and maroon. Genetic studies have confirmed that R. rupincola is in fact properly placed in Rhytidophyllum.
