Streptocarpus ionanthus ssp. velutinus is notable for its very hairy red-backed leaves, which are oval to elongated. The flowers are medium to dark blue, sometimes with white streaks. The hairs give a velvety appearance to the leaf surface, hence the Latin velutinus.
