This species is widely distributed in Central and South America. Its leaves have different patterns and sometimes the lower surface is reddish. In fact, plants in cultivation have dramatically patterned foliage, especially in juvenile plants.
Another species with similar foliage in adult plants is Drymonia chiribogana.
The calyx of this species is fimbriate and the flowers are usually yellowish.
