Kohleria allenii is a “tropical” Kohleria, better adapted to the heat and humidity of lower latitude tropics than most other members of the genus which grow at higher altitudes and in cooler temperatures. Plants can grow upwards of 4′ (130 cm) tall.  Note the open flower shape and sturdiness of the flower, perhaps indicating bat pollination. The flower is similar in shape (but not color!) to the bat pollinated Paliavana prasinata.

Views of other plants, here and here, illustrate some variability in flower shape and pattern.
