This group from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique consists of rosulate and unifoliate species with tube shaped flowers ranging from white to mauve. S. decipiens is a cave dweller and has a very peculiar growth form with a frail stem up to 10 cm long, not typically caulescent. Some of the species in this group could be viewed to be intermediates between unifoliates and rosulates in that they develop and flower like unifoliates but do develop secondary phyllomorphs to enable them to survive into a subsequent season. S. brachynema occurs on the isolated Gorongoza mountain peak in Mozambique which is moist because of its higher elevation on the semiarid coastal plain. Although some of these species are attractive, they are rarely cultivated.
